The Earthly Father of Jesus
Saint Joseph, venerated as the earthly father of Jesus Christ, holds a significant place in Christian tradition. The biblical portrayal of Joseph is primarily found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Born around 100 B.C.E., he is noted to have descended from the royal lineage of King David. Joseph's marriage to the Virgin Mary, Jesus's mother, is a central aspect of his story.
A Just and Humble Man
In the face of limited information in the New Testament, Joseph's virtues emerge prominently. Described as a "just man," he displayed compassion and humility. Upon discovering Mary's unexpected pregnancy, Joseph initially considered a quiet divorce. However, in a dream, an angel revealed the divine nature of Mary's child and instructed Joseph to take her as his wife, marking the beginning of his role as the foster father of Jesus.
Protector and Provider
Joseph's obedience to heavenly messages played a crucial role in protecting the Holy Family. Fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herod's threat, Joseph guided Mary and Jesus, exemplifying his commitment to safeguarding them. He provided for the Holy Family financially through his occupation as a carpenter in Nazareth, a trade which he presumably imparted to Jesus.
A Quiet Departure
Despite being a central figure in the early life of Jesus, Joseph's later life and death remain shrouded in mystery. Tradition suggests he likely died before the commencement of Jesus's public ministry.
