St. Pier Giorgio Frassati
"We who, by the grace of God, are Catholics, must not squander the best years of our lives as so many unhappy young people do, who worry about enjoying the good things in life, things that do not in fact bring any good, but rather the fruit of immorality in today’s world."

His Story
A Joyful Witness of Faith
Born in Turin, Italy in 1901, Pier Giorgio Frassati grew up in a prominent family, yet chose a life of humility, service, and deep devotion to God. Despite his parents’ lack of religious faith, he developed a strong spirituality centered on the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. John Paul II later called him the “Man of the Beatitudes” for the way he embodied Gospel virtues in daily life.
Service to the Poor and Love for the Church
From age 17, Pier Giorgio devoted himself to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, serving the sick, homeless, and marginalized. He often gave away his money, food, and even bus fare, preferring to sacrifice personal comfort for others. A passionate advocate for Catholic social teaching and justice, he joined Catholic Action, the People’s Party, and defended religious liberty during turbulent times in Italy.
Verso l’Alto – To the Heights
Frassati loved the outdoors, especially mountain climbing, which became both sport and spiritual retreat. His motto, “Verso l’Alto” (To the Heights), expressed not only his adventurous spirit but also his pursuit of holiness. He encouraged friends and youth groups to join him in prayer, adoration, and joyful companionship rooted in faith.
A Holy Death and Enduring Legacy
In 1925, while caring for the sick, Pier Giorgio contracted polio and died at only 24. Even on his deathbed, his thoughts remained with the poor he served. His funeral drew thousands of mourners, revealing the quiet impact of his hidden charity. Declared Blessed in 1990 and canonized on September 7, 2025, he stands as a patron of youth, athletes, and all seeking holiness in ordinary life.
St. Pier Giorgio’s example reminds us to live with joy, courage, and wholehearted love for Christ—always striving “to the heights.”
